Chords of Comfort: The Soothing Sound of Christian Music

I'm thrilled to share this post with you all, as just a few months ago, I wouldn't have been able to muster the enthusiasm or courage. A while ago, I lacked discernment in my listening habits, often consuming music without considering the artist's values. While some might argue that it doesn't matter as long as the music is Christian, I respectfully disagree. As consumers, it's essential to be intentional about what we feed our minds and spirits. If a "Christian" artist promotes a lifestyle that contradicts our values, we should consider exploring alternative options that align with our beliefs.

For instance, I once enjoyed Hillsong's music because it was familiar to me from my childhood. However, upon examining what they stand for, I realized it was time to reevaluate my connection to the brand and its leaders. Unfortunately, you are going to have many moments like that on your journey. But it shouldn't be viewed as a loss, as it paves the way for discovery of new and better things that align with your values. We should distance ourselves from worldly influences or those with blurred lines, embracing a more authentic and wholesome path ahead.

I'm a really curious person who is open to exploring various genres, including rap, hip hop, indie, and more. While I may not always connect with or enjoy every style, I'm willing to give it a listen and I appreciate the uniqueness they bring to the table. I've recently discovered Charly Beathard's music and I'm hooked! Her songs "Following", "Hallelujah Anyway", "Joy of the Lord", and "Heavenly Praise" have been on repeat for me. If you're a fan of country-infused pop with a slow soothing sound, I think you'll really appreciate her style.

You may have noticed the recent buzz surrounding Rachel Holt's song "I Was Gonna Be". Although she doesn't have any other songs, this one caught my attention. It's a song from the perspective of a unborn/aborted baby. I encourage everyone to give this song a listen.. It made me tear up when I first listened to it. Now, I can't help but replay it a thousand times. I have a big playlist that includes a few Christian songs that may not align with everyone's views, but I believe in exercising discernment and doing my own research.

These songs bring me joy and energize me to start my day. I often listen to them before Bible study or while getting ready in the morning, and they help set a positive tone for the day. On a particularly rough day when my mood was low, my sister surprised me by sending a song by Cody Carnes, "Firm Foundation". Although his music may not be for everyone, this particular song has made it on my list, and I appreciate the thoughtful gesture from my sister.

There are several Christian bands and artists that hold a special place in my heart. While VBS songs are certainly nostalgic, there are many others from my childhood that I still enjoy listening to. Casting Crowns is one such group that evokes warm, fuzzy feelings, reminding me of happy times spent listening to their music with my family. Although they may not be always be a staple on my playlist, it's great to revisit their songs every now and then.

As a young adult, it's rare to come across Christian artists my age who create music that resonates with me. When I do stumble upon them, I'm always intrigued. Katy Nichole is one artist who has truly caught my attention, and I find myself enjoying her music greatly, particularly her song "My God Can". What I appreciate most about Katy Nichole is not just her talent, but also her warm and kind personality. I think you'd enjoy her songs too!

When I feel frustrated with the lack of decent Christian music, I often turn to the classics from past decades, such as the 1940s and 1950s. My playlist is filled with these artists, which may not be exclusively Christian music, but I enjoy exploring their work. And yes, I do take the time to research each artist to ensure their music is good for me. I have a strong commitment to only listening to music that aligns with my Christian values and avoids explicit language and themes that promote sin.

My overall favorite way to find Christian music is by going through public playlists by people on youtube, apple music, etc. There are also so many videos talking about this very subject on Tik Tok and other platforms. All I urge is for you to use discernment in what you listen to. I have a previous post called The Sound of Seduction: The Allure of Music and the Danger of its Influence, and I highly suggest reading that post along with this one.

My other post, "The Sound of Seduction: The Allure of Music and the Danger of its influence," delves deeper into the significance of being mindful of the music we listen to, especially as Christians. I'm not perfect and I often make mistakes, but I strive to make intentional choices and encourage others to do the same. If you have any insights or recommendations on how to navigate this particular issue, I'd love to hear from you! Until next time, may your weekend be blessed and filled with life-giving music that glorifies the Lord.
